Fate of the Jedi is in many ways the swan song of the Legends universe. It begins by exiling Luke Skywalker who takes his son Ben on an epic journey reminiscent of The Odyssey. The father-son duo need to mend the rift that came at the hand of Ben's former master, Jacen Solo. They travel to a number of significant locations from the early days of the Expanded Universe, including Bakura, Dathomir, and Kessel. The series brings in an ancient evil figure named Abeloth and sees the Jedi Order infected with an inexplicable psychosis. The second book, Omen, introduces the enigmatic character of Vestara Kai, heiling from the Lost Tribe of the Sith, who have been stranded on the planet of Kesh for a millennia. They use the disarray of the Jedi to seize control of the galaxy once and for all. . . Fate of the Jedi benefits from the decades of Legends continuity that had been established up to this point in the timeline. For the fullest appreciation of the series, you'll first want to read the most consequential Legends stories that preceded it—the Thrawn Trilogy, Jedi Academy, Hand of Thrawn Duology, New Jedi Order, Dark Nest, and Legacy of the Force. Fate of the Jedi isn't as critically regarded as its preceding series, Legacy of the Force. The plot doesn't hold together as cohesively from author to author, and at times Luke and Ben's adventure feels like a sidetrack from the main plot line. That being said, for many Legends fans this is Grand Master Luke Skywalker at his absolute Jedi Master-est, which is a lot of fun! Fate of the Jedi is great for fans who are very invested in the post-Return of the Jedi Legends storyline, especially as it is so self-referential to the rest of the timeline. It's absolutely rewarding for fans who have been paying attention along the way. It's also a worthwhile read because it is such a monumental, epic 9-book series. It's certainly a series you can sink your teeth into, get invested in the mystery of the Jedi paranoia, and become attached to new characters such as Vestara Kai.
