his week The High Republic Show returned with its second installment, packed full of conversations with authors, creative directors, and artists and a book announcement that has Star Wars book fans begging for fall to get here RIGHT NOW PLEASE.
Host Krystina Arielle (this post cannot go on without mentioning how amazing that dress is, please don’t edit this out) gave a quick rundown of the stories that have been released so far and sat down with various Lucasfilm creators and High Republic writers to give us a behind-the-screens look at how this new era is constantly and brilliantly expanding.
Lucasfilm Art Director Troy Alders noted this is only the second time in his history with the company that artists have had the opportunity to bring completely new characters to life based on authors’ own ideas.
Collaboration in Star Wars storytelling has always resulted in the closest thing we may ever get to magic. Daniel Jose Older said one of his favorite parts of the process of creating stories for The High Republic has been working closely with these artists back-and-forth to turn ideas into fully-developed characters.
Senior Illustration Manager Jeffrey Thomas discussed how unused art created for past projects and concepts was used to inspire new ideas for The High Republic.
Lucasfilm Publishing Creative Director Michael Siglain credited the company’s recruitment of artists from all over the world for the vast diversity of characters created for this new era in Star Wars, from different species to ethnicities and beyond.
“We want readers to be able to see themselves in The High Republic. And we want them to see a very, very big galaxy. Let’s celebrate that.”
Arielle also spoke with High Republic authors Daniel José Older and Claudia Gray and Lucasfilm editor Jennifer Heddle about how the varying stories that make up the era fit together to create a much larger, cohesive narrative.
“We really wanted to come up with something that felt fresh and different and hadn’t really been done before,” Heddle said. “One of my favorite parts [of the process] really was just watching our five authors bounce off of each other.”
It’s important to note that Older is very passionate about dinosaur-riding gladiators. Nothing has been officially confirmed, but keep that possibility in the back of your mind. You never know.
He already gets to write Young[er] Yoda. He has plenty going for him already.
This week’s episode of The High Republic Show ended with an unexpected but highly welcome announcement, in addition to the main character reveal for Justina Ireland’s next book Out of the Shadows (SHE’S SO COOL).
Cavan Scott’s audio drama Tempest Runner starring Nihil leader Lourna Dee arrives this fall. That marks three years in a row we’ll be getting a new full original story in audio form … and we’re not mad about it.
