The second installment of the Rogue Squadron series of novels sees the mission to liberate Coruscant from Imperial control take shape. The Rogues first free dangerous members of the Black Sun criminal syndicate and plant them on the Imperial capital to sabotage the city from within—much to the displeasure of Corran Horan, who locked them up to begin with! While trying to infiltrate and take down the Empire from the underlevels, the Rogues learn of Isard’s deadly Krytos Virus which targets nonhumans—Isard’s diabolical plan to hand the planet over to the Rebels only to have a catastrophic plague on their hands. The Rebels have to find a way to not only free Coruscant, stop the virus, but sniff out the spy in their ranks as well!

Publisher's Summary

They are the X-wing fighters: sleek, swift, and deadly. And as the battle against the Empire rages across the vastness of space, the pilots risk both their lives and their machines for the cause of the Rebel Alliance. Now they must embark on a dangerous espionage mission, braving betrayal and death on the Imperial homeworld to smash the power of a ruthless foe!

It is at the evil heart of a battered and reeling Empire: Coruscant, the giant city-world from whose massive towers the Imperial High Command directs the war. The Rebels will invade this mighty citadel in a daring move to bring the Empire to its knees. But first Wedge Antilles and his X-wing pilots must infiltrate Coruscant to gain vital intelligence information.

Capture means death or, worse, enslavement by the vicious leader known as "Iceheart": Ysanne Isard, now Emperor in all but name. And one of Rogue Squadron's own is already her slave, a traitor hidden behind a mask of innocence, working to betray both colleagues and the Rebellion itself.

Another fantastic installment in the X-Wing series by Michael Stackpole. The book is an interesting combination of a slow burn with fast-paced action. Stackpole expertly combines plot points that span multiple books with quicker missions and plenty of action scenes. This combination kept me turning the pages, as I could hardly put the book down to see how Rogue Squadron would deal with Ysanne Isard's deadly plots. If you've read the first book in the series, I'm sure your expectations for the rest of the series are high; Wedge's Gamble won't disappoint.

Wedge's Gamble was a solid follow up to Rogue Squadron, although it is entirely different in many ways. While it still follows the exploits of Wedge Antilles and his Rogue Squadron, it takes them out of their X-wings and places them behind enemy lines on an undercover mission on Coruscant. If Rogue Squadron could be classified as a military novel, Wedge's Gamble can certainly be classified as an espionage novel, so take that into account. Overall, it's similar enough that you should enjoy it if you enjoyed Rogue Squadron. Especially if you loved the characters.
