Gilad Pellaeon
Pellaeon was a tried-and-true Imperial with a heart of gold
H

e first debuted in Timothy Zahn’s groundbreaking, number one New York Times Bestseller, Heir to the Empire, has since gone on to become one of the most beloved characters in Star Wars Legends, and is now breaking through into live-action with a recent appearance in season three of The Mandalorian—Gilad Pellaeon. Captain Pellaeon’s original role in the Thrawn Trilogy was a reader stand-in character through whom the audience could observe the remarkable and mysterious tactics of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Pellaeon was a tried-and-true Imperial with a heart of gold; the captain of the Star Destroyer Chimera who conducted himself with the very best traits an Imperial officer could hold—loyalty, dignity, and order. Unlike the caricature of Imperial officers we’ve come to associate with over the years, Pellaeon none of the cruelty or selfish ambition of his many counterparts. Instead, he was always willing to learn, to question the status quo, and even work with his “enemies” if the situation required.

Throughout the decades of continuity to follow throughout the publication history of the Expanded Universe, Pellaeon is a character who developed beautifully after his initial appearance. We see him commanding the Imperial fleet with brilliant battle tactics learned from his tutelage under Thrawn, while also holding his own as a political leader in the Empire in the post-Endor era. He advanced in the ranks, surviving Thrawn and even surpassing his greatness by some standards. He eventually became the leader of the Imperial Remnant that would make a treaty with the New Republic to put an official end to the Galactic Civil War, carving out a piece of territory that the Empire would continue to hold for decades to come. He displayed a mix of the confidence, wisdom, humility, and integrity that allowed for the survival of the Empire when they had their backs against the wall. Pellaeon eventually partnered with the New Republic to form the Galactic Alliance, earning the Empire respectability in the new era of galactic governance after the New Republic era had run its course.

Want to know more about why so many hold Pellaeon so dear and are beyond thrilled to see him make his grand return to Star Wars? Below you can find a thorough list of titles in which the character appears.

Thrawn: Treason

Written by
Timothy Zahn
Artwork by
There’s nothing Thrawn wants more than to impress the Emperor. And the one thing standing in the way of fully gaining Palpatine’s favor and trust is a man -- or machine? -- who hides behind not only a mask, but an entire suit of menacing black armor. The sequel to Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn takes a unique approach to filling out the Chiss’s backstory, alternating between present time and flashbacks to showcase his complicated relationship with Darth Vader … and who Vader used to be. In these flashbacks, Thrawn and a Jedi named Anakin Skywalker are forced to work together to complete their respective missions. This mirrors the assignment Thrawn and Vader must complete in order to please their shared master.

Grand Admiral Thrawn faces the ultimate test of his loyalty to the Empire in this epic Star Wars novel from bestselling author Timothy Zahn.

“If I were to serve the Empire, you would command my allegiance.”

Such was the promise Grand Admiral Thrawn made to Emperor Palpatine at their first meeting. Since then, Thrawn has been one of the Empire’s most effective instruments, pursuing its enemies to the very edges of the known galaxy. But as keen a weapon as Thrawn has become, the Emperor dreams of something far more destructive.

Now, as Thrawn’s TIE defender program is halted in favor of Director Krennic’s secret Death Star project, he realizes that the balance of power in the Empire is measured by more than just military acumen or tactical efficiency. Even the greatest intellect can hardly compete with the power to annihilate entire planets.

As Thrawn works to secure his place in the Imperial hierarchy, his former protégé Eli Vanto returns with a dire warning about Thrawn’s homeworld. Thrawn’s mastery of strategy must guide him through an impossible choice: duty to the Chiss Ascendancy, or fealty to the Empire he has sworn to serve. Even if the right choice means committing treason.

Heir to the Empire

Written by
Timothy Zahn
Artwork by

Heir to the Empire is essential reading material because without it, the rest of the Expanded Universe might not exist. In this book, Zahn manages to construct a new type of Star Wars villain in Grand Admiral Thrawn who defeats his enemies with superior intellect that is every bit as overwhelming as Vader’s Force choke. Luke, Han, Leia, and the entire cast of the Original Trilogy make their triumphant return and must find a way to deal with this new threat who is poised to bring back the Empire even stronger than it was before.

Timothy Zahn has arguably crafted some of the most important books in the Expanded Universe and they all started with Heir to the Empire.

After destroying the second Death Star and freeing the galaxy from the Emperor’s clutches, Luke, Han, and Leia find themselves trying to lead the fledgling New Republic into a new age. However, in the far reaches of space, a new threat rises from the ashes of the Empire in the form of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Despite only having the remains of the Imperial military at his disposal, Thrawn’s intellectual prowess promises to push our heroes to their absolute limits. Timothy Zahn changed Star Wars forever when he released Heir to the Empire in 1991, and it continues to have a profound impact on the fandom to this day. It proved that Star Wars could not only live beyond the story of the original films, but that it could thrive. All Expanded Universe books were born out of the spirit of this novel, making it essential reading for all fans.

Dark Force Rising

Written by
Timothy Zahn
Artwork by

The New Republic is already on the brink of collapse with Grand Admiral Thrawn’s plight to re-conquer the galaxy, but its problems are far from over. A traitor has found its way into the highest level of its leadership at the same time as Luke Skywalker has been lured away by the promises of the long-forgotten, unstable Jedi Jorus C’baoth. Just as things seem as dark as they can get, Han and Lando learn that Thrawn is on the brink of making a discovery that could bring an end to the New Republic altogether.

The second installment of the Thrawn trilogy manages to raise the stakes even higher than the first. Timothy Zahn—like Grand Admiral Thrawn himself—is in top form in this novel.

The dying Empire's most cunning and ruthless warlord - Grand Admiral Thrawn - has taken command of the remnants of the Imperial fleet and launched a massive campaign aimed at the New Republic's destruction. With the aid of unimaginable weapons long hidden away by the Emperor on a backwater planet, Thrawn plans to turn the tide of battle, overwhelm the New Republic, and impose his iron rule throughout the galaxy.

Meanwhile, Han and Lando Calrissian race against time to find proof of treason inside the highest Republican Council - only to discover instead a ghostly fleet of warships that could bring doom to their friends and victory to their enemies.

Yet most dangerous of all is a new Dark Jedi, risen from the ashes of a shrouded past, consumed by bitterness...and scheming to corrupt Luke Skywalker to the Dark Side.

The Last Command

Written by
Timothy Zahn
Artwork by

Grand Admiral Thrawn and his Imperial remnants make their final push to regain control of the galaxy with a strike at the very heart of the New Republic. As Leia struggles to hold government—and her family—together, Han and Chewbacca go on a mission to rally their fellow smugglers to the cause. As Luke returns to lend his help, it quickly becomes apparent that his most daunting challenge still lies ahead: confronting the darkness in himself.

Zahn rounds out this triumphant trilogy with a final chapter that worthy of its predecessors. Readers who have followed Thrawn’s story to this point will be riveted until the final pages that give a fitting end to one of the most formidable villains Star Wars fans have ever known.

The embattled Republic reels from the attacks of Grand Admiral Thrawn, who has marshaled the remnants of the Imperial forces and driven the Rebels back with an abominable technology recovered from the Emperor's secret fortress: clone soldiers. As Thrawn mounts his final siege, Han and Chewbacca struggle to form a coalition of smugglers for a last-ditch attack against the empire, while Leia holds the Alliance together and prepares for the birth of her Jedi twins.

Overwhelmed by the ships and clones at Thrawn's command, the Republic has one last hope: sending a small force, led by Luke Skywalker, into the very stronghold that houses Thrawn's terrible cloning machines. There a final danger awaits, as the Dark Jedi C'baoth directs the battle against the Rebels and builds his strength to finish what he had already started: the destruction of Luke Skywalker.

Darksaber

Written by
Kevin J. Anderson
Artwork by
When a powerful and deadly weapon known as the Darksaber resurfaces, it poses a grave threat to the New Republic and its fragile peace with the remnants of the Galactic Empire. With the potential to annihilate entire planets, the Darksaber becomes a sought-after prize for various factions vying for control, including Imperial warlords, ambitious politicians, and other dark forces. As tensions mount and the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance, familiar heroes such as Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo, along with a new generation of Jedi apprentices, must come together to confront this looming menace. Along the way, they encounter formidable enemies, including the ruthless Moff Kentor Sarne and the cunning Durga the Hutt, who will stop at nothing to obtain the Darksaber and use it for their own nefarious purposes. Amidst epic battles, daring escapes, and heart-pounding confrontations, the stakes rise higher than ever as the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance. With the fate of countless lives at stake, the heroes of the New Republic must summon all their courage, skills, and resourcefulness to defeat the looming threat of the Darksaber and restore peace to the galaxy.

Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, cloaked by the Force and riding with the hostile Sand People, have returned to the dunes of the desert planet Tatooine in hopes of finding what Luke so desperately seeks: contact with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Luke is hoping the old Jedi Knight's spirit will tell him how to help his love, Callista, regain her lost ability to use the Force. Tormented and haunted, Luke cannot rest until Callista is a Jedi in the fullest sense, for only then will the link between their minds and souls be restored. Yet brewing on Tatooine is news that will shake Luke and Han and threaten everything they value.

The disturbing piece of information is that the evil Hutts, criminal warlords of the galaxy, are building a secret superweapon: a reconstruction of the original Death Star, to be named Darksaber. This planet-crushing power will be in the ruthless hands of Durga the Hutt -- a creature without conscience or mercy.

But there is worse news yet: the Empire lives. The beautiful Admiral Daala, still very much alive and more driven than ever to destroy the Jedi, has joined forces with the defeated Pellaeon, former second in command to Grand Admiral Thrawn. Together they are marshaling Imperial forces to wipe out the New Republic.

Now, as Luke, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, Artoo and Threepio regroup to face these threats, they are joined by new Jedi Knights and Callista. Together they must fight on two fronts, outshooting and outsmarting the most formidable enemies in the galaxy. In Darksaber the Jedi are heading for the ultimate test of their power--a test in which all the temptations of the dark side beckon. And Luke Skywalker must draw upon his innermost resources to fight for a world in which he can not only live, but dare to love.

Specter of the Past

Written by
Timothy Zahn
Artwork by

Horror comes in many forms. For Leia and Han, it takes the form of a conspiracy that threatens to topple the galaxy’s new government before it ever has a chance to truly start. For Luke and Lando, it takes the form of a cluster of attacks from clone-crewed pirate ships. For the New Republic as a whole, it takes the form of an evil believed to be long dead: Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Against readers’ expectations, Timothy Zahn picks up the story of Grand Admiral Thrawn right where he left it to spin a brand new tale of intrigue. With plenty of twists and turns, you won’t have this story figured out until its final chapters.

Once the unquestioned master of countless solar systems, the Empire is tottering on the brink of total collapse. Once commanding an invincible armada of Star Destroyers, its fleet has been reduced to a skeleton force. Day by day, neutral systems are rushing to join the New Republic coalition. But with the end of the war in sight, the New Republic has fallen victim to its own success. An unwieldy alliance of races and traditions, the confederation now finds itself riven by age-old animosities.

Princess Leia struggles against all odds to hold the New Republic together. But she has powerful enemies. An ambitious Moff Disra leads a conspiracy to divide the uneasy coalition with an ingenious plot to blame the Bothans for a heinous crime that could lead to genocide and civil war. At the same time, Luke Skywalker, along with Lando Calrissian and Talon Karrde, pursues a mysterious group of pirate ships whose crews consist of clones. And then comes the most startling news of all: Grand Admiral Thrawn--believed to be dead for ten years--is reported alive. The most cunning and ruthless warlord in Imperial history has seemingly returned to lead the Empire to triumph.

As Han and Leia try to prevent the unraveling of the New Republic in the face of this fearful and inexplicable threat from the past, Luke sets out to track down the rogue pirate ships. To do so, he will team up with Mara Jade, with whom he will share his growing mastery of the Force and the ever-present threat of the dark side. All the while, lurking in the shadows is the enigmatic Major Tierce, a disciple of Emperor Palpatine, sharing his long-dead master's lust for power, schooled in the devious stratagems of Thrawn himself, and armed with his own dark plans for the New Republic and the Empire.

Timothy Zahn

The New Republic, born of fire and chaos, remains fragile. Its renowned spies, the Bothans, find themselves accused of several horrendous attacks around the galaxy. If rumors can be trusted, their next attack will strike right at the heart of the New Republic. Luke, Mara Jade, Han, and Leia must not only uncover the truth of the accusations, but also their source. Unfortunately, all signs seem to point towards one man whose very name makes their blood run cold: Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Vision of the Future is the second half of the Hand of Thrawn duology, taking place directly after Specter of the Past. For a beleaguered Empire, desperate times call for desperate measures. Sowing discord among the fragile coalition of the New Republic, remnants of the once powerful Empire make one last play for victory. The Final Prophecy

Written by
Greg Keyes
Artwork by
The Final Prophecy is the penultimate entry in the inordinately massive New Jedi Order series. It sets up the finale in a number of ways, most significantly with the story of Nom Anor, the Shamed Ones, and the living planet Zenoma Sekot—which is a beacon of hope to some and a terrible threat and reminder of the Yuuzhan Vong’s past to others. It also contains key character development for Tahiri Veila as she battles to regain her identity after having been brainwashed by the Yuuzhan Vong.

As a beleaguered galaxy fights its way back from the brink of destruction, the Jedi's most fearsome enemy plots to end the war—and claim victory—with a final act of domination….

The troubles for the embattled living planet Zonama Sekot have just begun. As Luke Skywalker and Jacen Solo negotiate its place in the galactic struggle against the Yuuzhan Vong, one of its organic ships is taken by the alien invaders. Scientist Nen Yim is ordered to use the captive to find weak spots in Zonama Sekot's technology. But what Nen Yim discovers about the planet and its mysteries shocks her to the core. Clearly her people have gone terribly astray. For the peace-loving planet harbors not only the key to its own destruction, but the long-forgotten secrets of the Yuuzhan Vong themselves.

Meanwhile, General Wedge Antilles, commanding one fleet in a three-pronged campaign to retake the Bilbringi system, is suddenly stranded deep in Yuuzhan Vong space, cut off from all contact. Wedge and his ships must rely on trickery and brilliant battle tactics if they are to survive long enough to ensure the success of one of the deadliest and most crucial missions the Galactic Alliance forces have ever seen….

Betrayal

Written by
Aaron Allston
Artwork by
Jacen Solo is one of the most well-developed characters in the Legends timeline. His experiences in the hands of Vergere and the Yuuzahn Vong changed him irrevocably. He saved the galaxy once, but to what lengths is he willing to go in order to save it again? Betrayal takes his story in a new direction, reintroducing a villain from the original Marvel comics, Lumiya, who guides Jacen along a dark path. All the while, Jacen is serving as the Jedi teacher to his nephew, Ben Skywalker, and the Skywalker and Solo clans might be torn apart along family lines. It would be helpful to have read the New Jedi Order before starting Legacy of the Force, but we realize that's a tall order. At the very least, you'll want to familiarize yourself with the main characters and with Jacen's torture at the hands of Vergere in Traitor before diving in.

This is the era of Luke Skywalker's legacy; the Jedi Master has unified the order into a cohesive group of powerful Jedi Knights. But as the new era begins, planetary interests threaten to disrupt this time of relative peace, and Luke is plagued with visions of an approaching darkness. Evil is rising again—out of the best intentions—and it looks as if the legacy of the Skywalkers may come full circle. Honor and duty will collide with friendship and blood ties as the Skywalker and Solo clans find themselves on opposing sides of an explosive conflict with potentially devastating repercussions for both families, for the Jedi order and for the entire galaxy.

When a mission to uncover an illegal missile factory on the planet Adumar ends in a violent ambush—from which Jedi Knight Jacen Solo and his protégé and cousin, Ben Skywalker, narrowly escape with their lives—it's the most alarming evidence yet that sparks of political unrest are threatening to ignite into total rebellion. The governments of numerous worlds are chafing under the strict regulations of the Galactic Alliance, and diplomatic efforts to enforce compliance are failing. Fearing the worst, the Alliance readies a preemptive display of military might in a bid to bring the rogue worlds to heel before an uprising erupts. The designated target of this exercise: planet Corellia—renowned for the brash independence and renegade spirit that have made its favorite son, Han Solo, a legend.

Something of a rogue himself, Jacen is nevertheless duty bound as a Jedi to stand with his uncle, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, on the side of the Galactic Alliance. But when the wary Corellians launch a counterstrike, the Alliance's show of force—and a secret mission to disable Corellia's crucial Centerpoint Station—give way to an armed skirmish. Once the smoke clears, the battle lines are drawn. Now the specter of full scale war looms between a growing cadre of defiant planets and the Galactic Alliance that some fear is becoming a new Empire. And even as both sides struggle to find a diplomatic solution mysterious acts of treachery and sabotage threaten peace efforts at every turn.

Determined to root out those behind the mayhem, Jacen follows a trail of cryptic clues to a dark rendezvous with the most shocking of revelations—while Luke grapples with something even more troubling: dream visions of a shadowy figure whose Force power and ruthlessness remind him of Darth Vader—a lethal enemy who strikes like a dark spirit on a mission of doom. An agent of evil who, if Luke's visions come to pass, will bring untold pain to the Jedi Master—and to the entire galaxy.
